Useful flag color codes

So what does the rainbow logo flag in your yard mean?

Red flag - Red is the most common flag. It indicates electrical facilities, such as cables and power lines. These markers connect to the power lines of your neighbor's grid. Marking these intersections helps avoid community-wide power outages.
White flags - A white flag means excavation. Often you will see these used for city excavation projects. The extent of the white flagged area will give you an idea of how large the project you are working on is.
Pink flags - These are used as temporary survey markers. When surveyors measure, they mark their work with a pink flag. Measure twice, cut once, and use a lot of pink flags. Pink is also used to mark mysteries. If a utility cannot be identified, the staff will mark it pink.
Yellow Flags - Just like yellow caution tape, you want to stay away from yellow flags. These mark gaseous materials, petroleum, vapors and other substances that will react adversely when loosened and may cause soil contamination or explosion.
Orange flags - remember land lines? Like other communication systems (such as signal or alarm lines or TV cables), they get an orange flag. Don't anger your neighbors by cutting cables before a big game.
Blue flags - Blue means water, irrigation or mud. Usually this is drinking water. Damage this line and you could flood your home or find yourself without water for days.
Purple flags - Purple also flags water, but the kind you don't want to drink: recycled water from wastewater. But it's good for landscape irrigation.
Green flags - Green flags indicate drains and sewers. Cutting this line could release toxic fumes and flood the neighborhood.
